BEST RIDE FROM TOWN MOUNTAIN BIKE EVER!

For our vacation clients, here are helpful tips when taking AMTRAK to Green River, Utah or Grand Junction, Colorado to connect to Moab with a rental car or shuttle service. Green River is just 45 miles from Moab, but not famous for its tourist services. Grand Junction is 100 miles from Moab, but a very nice place to visit with easily available rentals and a shuttle service. See below for details!

The following was lifted from an email written by a client who took our advice and used AMTRAK from Oakland to Grand Junction:

"We had a very nice train ride from Oakland to Grand Junction, with especially beautiful scenery through the Sierras and through the canyons near the end of the trip. We got a sleeperette, which I highly recommend, and although it is not as comfy as your own bed, it isn't bad at all. (Tip: Bring along some foam earplugs, to dampen the sound during the night.) Meals in the dining car are included with the sleeperette, but we brought our own picnic food from home, being a bit suspicious about what we'd get. Our outbound train had some problems in the dining car, so we were very glad we did. On the way back, however, we did eat in the dining car. The food was okay, and we talked with some very engaging other travelers. Scott met a guy in the lounge car who had been an army special ops guy, then a photographer for Playboy magazine for many years. He definitely had some interesting stories to tell!"

"One thing you have to know about train travel is that you cannot be in a rush. There are frequently delays on Amtrak, and the farther along the route you are from the starting point, the more likely your train will be late. Starting from Oakland is great on the way out, since that is the beginning of the route. We actually got in early to Grand Junction. On the way back, the train comes from Chicago, and ours was a few hours delayed coming into Grand Junction, but by the time we made it back to Oakland, they had made up most of the time. The upside is that you completely avoid that weird sense of dislocation that plane travel often leaves you with, since you are traveling at a more human pace. Bring along some good reading material, relax and enjoy the experience."

"If you are going to rent a car in GJ, there is an Enterprise rental car downtown office, with a direct dial phone located in the Amtrak station, BUT they have fairly limited office hours (and are closed on Sunday). If you arrive when they are closed, you can take Sunshine taxi to the airport and pick up a rental car there."

As for car rentals, we would prefer you stick with the environmental thrust of a "green" trip with Dreamride, and we want you to save a little money, too. American Spirit Shuttle offers van rides from Grand Junction to Moab and back--call Bonnie at (970) 523-7662 to reserve in advance. Dreamride will arrange a private shuttle from Green River, if you are reserving a private package with the ELITE SERVICE UPGRADE. Green River is not a place where there are a lot of services, so don't wing-it. If you want a shuttles, but would like to drive out of town at some point to experience one of the National Parks, we suggest renting a Jeep in Moab. We will point you to a local Jeep rental service.

IF YOU STAY IN LEVEL 4 OR 5 LODGINGS, NEITHER A CAR OR BIKE IS REQUIRED FOR GETTING TO THE BEST RESTAURANTS, TO OUR SHOP OR TO THE BEST LOCAL BAR. IF YOU WANT TO RIDE AROUND TOWN, BRING A BIKE, LOCK AND LIGHTS. WE DO NOT ALLOW RENTALS TO BE USED OUTSIDE OF THE GUIDED RIDES. THEY ARE NOT CITY BIKES.

Environmentally Smart Ride From Town Series
BE GREEN! Let's face it, we encourage fossil fuel consumption when we market the best mountain biking on Earth to mountain bikers around the globe. Dreamride's owners, environmentalists first and mountain bikers second, feel the sting of guilt, so we offer the chance to conserve fuel, save money, and enjoy classic trails near Moab the way locals do, by riding directly from town. Our RideFromTown trails eliminates the need for a shuttle vehicle for use during daily rides. You've gotta be strong enough for the extra mileage.
